The head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre recently warned that a major cyberattack on the UK is a matter of “when, not if”, joining an array of experts who emphasise the growing risk associated with computerised systems. The shipping industry is no exception: While new technology is constantly bringing about great innovation and potential for efficiencies in the maritime sector, it also increases the industry’s reliance on digitalisation, making it more vulnerable to cyber incidents. Information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) on board ships are becoming more and more intertwined, and are often connected to the internet. This leads to different levels of exposure to a variety of cyber risks which may originate from external as well as internal sources. New approaches to assess cyber risks and the implementation of security strategies are fundamental to be prepared for a cyber incident.

In this talk, Matthew Montgomery, Senior Associate at HFW, will discuss various risks related to increased digitalisation and automation in the maritime industry. Aron Sorensen, Head of Maritime Technology & Regulation at BIMCO, will look at effective ways to conduct cyber risk management. Following the introductory presentations there will be time for Q&A with the audience. The panel discussion will be moderated by Lars Lange, Secretary General of IUMI.
