Gunmen tail Vietnamese cargo ship in Sulu Sea

By Insurance Marine News, 9th March 2017 | Print version

A speedboat carrying at least six gunmen was seen tailing Vietnamese cargo ship Phu An during daylight hours on March 5th as it sailed through the Sulu Sea, north of the Malaysian port of Sandakan, reports Maritime Threats and Incidents from North P&I and Gray Page. PHU AN immediately changed course and alerted the Malaysian authorities, according to a security official quoted by The Star Malaysia. The ship headed into Malaysian waters where it was met by a naval vessel and escorted to a safe berth at Sandakan. The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) have urged ships to avoid the Sulu Sea whenever.
