Despite the vote to adjourn the MEPC Extraordinary Session in October 2025, the transition to alternative fuels continues across the industry. However, currently it remains unclear which fuels will be favoured in the future. It is crucial for the maritime industry, including for marine insurers, to assess potential safety concerns associated with measures to reduce the carbon footprint.
METAFUEL is a Research and Development project conducted by The Danish Institute of Fire and Security (DBI) which is focused on supporting the safe implementation of alternative marine fuels. It looks specifically at ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol. The project provides a matrix-based decision support tool that enables stakeholders to assess fire safety challenges, readiness levels, and regulatory gaps related to these fuels.
In this webinar, Leonard Sang Tuei, Project Leader at DBI, will discuss the findings of the METAFUEL Project. He is followed by Etienne Senard, Expert for Marine & Energy at Erget Group, who will share real-life examples of ships propelled with alternative fuels and the risks and claims associated with them.
Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A that follows the presentations. If you have any comments or queries prior to the session, please send them to education@iumi.com.
