Upcoming webinar: Barriers to insurance cover for small fishing vessels

Millions of small fishing vessels of less than 12 metres in length operate in developing countries without any insurance cover, leaving the fishers and their families vulnerable in case of damage or loss of their boats. The UN’s Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) has raised awareness for this protection gap and facilitated exchanges of relevant actors to address the key barriers in the supply of insurance services to small-scale fishers worldwide. Obstacles includes limited knowledge of fishing vessels and operations among insurers, gaps in safety inspections of small fishing boats, and the perceived low profitability, high transaction costs, and cumbersome administrative processes associated with small fishing vessel insurance services.

In this webinar, experts from the FAO and the insurance sector will provide insights on how to overcome existing barriers and introduce newly developed guidelines and checklists for the survey and inspection of small fishing vessels, and insurance value and risk assessment of small fishing vessels. You will hear from:

  • Raymon Van Anrooy, Senior Fishery Officer, Fishing Operations and Technology Team (NFIFO), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (Session 1+2)
  • Varun Tandon, International Fisheries Consultant Equitable Livelihoods Team (NFIFL), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (Session 1+2)
  • Israel de la Cruz, Department Manager, Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (Session 1)
  • Maria Fernanda Alonso, Vice President, Head Marine Latin America, Global Specialty, Swiss Re America (Session 2)
