IUMI Briefing: Escalation in the Arabian Gulf following US-Israel Strikes on Iran

6. March 2026

Recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets – and the subsequent retaliatory action by Iran and aligned groups – have significantly escalated geopolitical tensions across the Middle East. The situation has triggered a US-declared “Maritime Warning Zone” covering the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, North Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, with heightened risk for US- and Israel-affiliated shipping, regional port infrastructure and energy-linked maritime activity.

Against this rapidly evolving backdrop, we organised a dedicated IUMI briefing analysing the maritime risk implications for shipping and marine insurance.

On 4 March 2026 we were pleased to welcome:

  • Greg O’Farrell, Associate Director, Ambrey Analytics
  • Daniel Müller, Senior Analyst , Ambrey Analytics

The session provided:

  • An updated threat assessment for the Persian/Arabian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz
  • Insights into the exposure of affiliated merchant shipping and port infrastructure
  • Analysis of the evolving posture of US naval forces and the declared Maritime Warning Zone
  • Assessment of risks stemming from regional actors, including the potential resumption of attacks by Iran-aligned groups
  • Practical considerations for transit risk assessments, ship security measures and operational planning

Given the direct implications for underwriting, war risk, hull and cargo exposures, this discussion is highly relevant for insurers, brokers and risk professionals monitoring developments in the region.
