SIMI & IUMI

By Ge Qi, Shanghai Institute of Marine Insurance

On 31 May the Shanghai Institute of Marine Insurance (SIMI) held a conference titled “Openness, Cooperation and the Future - SIMI and IUMI”.  Sean Dalton, Vice President of IUMI, Selina Lau, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (also the IUMI Asia Hub) and more than 90 SIMI members attended the meeting.

SIMI has always maintained close ties with international marine insurance partners and so the meeting reviewed the history of SIMI joining IUMI and the many IUMI activities SIMI has participated in. The conference heard that the Association plans to launch a range of SIMI insurance clauses for new areas such as digitalisation, intellectualization and green-related issues. A shipowner’s representative from China Merchants put forward their expectations and requirements for SIMI, hoping that marine insurers would make a greater contribution to the stability and prosperity of the global shipping industry.

Sean Dalton then provided an overview of IUMI and its role in serving and promoting the global marine insurance industry. Selina Lau introduced the IUMI Hong Kong Hub and the forthcoming Asia Forum.

More and more Chinese marine insurers are gathering in Shanghai and SIMI will continue to provide a platform for communication and cooperation.
