It is with great sadness that we report the death of Anthony Stuart “Tony” Nunn OBE at the grand age of 97 years.
Tony was a well-known and much respected stalwart of the London marine insurance market who will be remembered for his friendliness as well as his vast knowledge and capability. Tony was a Hull Underwriter for the Scottish Lion Insurance Company and later served as Chairman of the Institute of London Underwriters (ILU), a forerunner of the International Underwriting Association (IUA). He was also Chairman of the Joint Hull Committee and a board member of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and the American Bureau of Shipping. After he retired from management duties, Tony continued to work in the sector for many years as an advisor for the ILU and also as IUMI’s IMO representative. He attended many IUMI conferences.
Tony was also a great sportsman having been a member of the MCC (the world’s most active cricket club) for 80 years and President of the ILU cricket team. Immediately post war, Tony played hockey for one of the strongest club sides in the south of England and, in 1952, represented Great Britain at the Helsinki Olympics where his team won bronze medals. Tony played in all three of GB’s matches. He later played hockey for England.
Tony is survived by his two daughters and three granddaughters and he will be remembered fondly by all those who met him.
