Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the maritime industry’s most widely used vessel-tracking technology but its greatest value comes when the signal is interpreted with care. Originally introduced under SOLAS as a collision-avoidance and safety tool, AIS enables vessels to transmit identity, position, course, speed, navigational status and voyage-related information to nearby ships, shore stations and satellite or vessel-based receivers. Today, that data underpins maritime domain awareness for ship operators, ports, governments, cargo interests and insurers.

For marine insurance professionals, AIS provides a powerful basis for monitoring vessel movements, assessing exposure, supporting claims analysis, identifying potential sanctions or compliance concerns and understanding activity around ports, terminals, chokepoints and offshore infrastructure. However, AIS should not be treated as a fully validated source of truth. The system was not designed as a global intelligence platform and contains no built-in mechanism to confirm whether transmitted information is accurate.

Several factors can affect interpretation. Coverage gaps for instance may result from receiver limitations rather than deliberate behaviour. Terrestrial AIS is strong in coastal and port areas but limited by range and line of sight; satellite AIS extends visibility offshore but can be affected by congestion and message collision; vessel-based AIS can fill gaps along trade routes but depends on participating ships being nearby. As a result, distinguishing a vessel that has genuinely “gone dark” from one that is simply not being received requires specialist analysis.

AIS data can also be incomplete, inconsistent or deliberately manipulated. Vessel names, MMSIs, IMO numbers, ship types, destinations and positions may be entered incorrectly or altered to obscure activity. Increasingly, deceptive shipping practices involve visibility rather than invisibility: vessels may continue broadcasting while falsifying identity, location or voyage information. Techniques such as spoofing, position manipulation, GNSS interference and anomalous voyage patterns can create misleading port calls, false proximity events, fabricated routes or suspicious gaps around high-risk areas.

The key message is that AIS remains essential, but it is only one signal. Its value depends on robust processing, identity resolution, destination harmonisation, anomaly detection and corroboration with complementary sources. Used in this way, AIS can support more informed underwriting, claims handling, accumulation monitoring, sanctions screening and maritime risk assessment. Download the full paper to learn more ›
