Module C: Dr Jennifer Lavelle, Senior Associate, Clyde & Co

Dr Jennifer Lavelle is a Senior Associate and Marine Claims and Policy Specialist at Clyde & Co LLP. She specialises in providing marine and non-marine policy coverage advice to major international insurers and trading companies worldwide. Jennifer also handles recovery claims in arbitration and in court in the UK and abroad. She has a Ph.D. in commercial law and researched and taught various commercial and maritime law subjects at the University of Southampton before joining Clyde & Co., contributing to Merkin, Marine Insurance Legislation (5th edition) and Clarke (ed.), Maritime Law Evolving. She is currently assisting John Dunt in updating the third edition of Marine Cargo Insurance.

Loss prevention and claims: Emek Ersin Takmaz, Deputy Regional Managing Director APAC, ABL Group

Emek is a Naval Architect and the Deputy Regional Managing Director for ABL’s operations in Asia Pacific based in Singapore. He has a decade of leadership experience including the successful establishment and growth of ABL’s German office as General Manager.

With a strong international track record, Emek is a solution-driven professional who has contributed to a wide range of challenging projects. Over the course of his career, he has held roles on the EPCI, vessel owner, and MWS sides preparing, reviewing, and approving contracts, calculations, drawings, method statements, and other project-specific documentation. Operationally, he has overseen the loading, discharge, and installation of special project cargoes and components for offshore wind farms as well as oil and gas projects. In his role as a consultant, he has also participated in various investigation cases preparing expert reports on damages to vessels and cargoes.

Before joining ABL Group, Emek served as Head of Projects Engineering with the T&I contractor Hansa Heavy Lift in Hamburg and Houston. Earlier in his career, he worked with the EPCI company McDermott in Dubai.

Module E: Neil Roberts, Head of Marine & Aviation, Lloyd’s Market Association

Neil Roberts has worked in the London insurance market since 1985. He is Head of Marine and Aviation for the Lloyd’s Market Association and acts as London market liaison with the wider maritime services community, at both commercial and government levels, on technical and maritime security issues. He is secretary to IUMI’s Ocean Hull Committee and chairs the IUMI Policy Forum.

Module A: Matthew Wilmshurst, Partner, HFW

Matthew works with ship-owners, NVOCs and transport operators, cargo interests and insurers on logistics and supply chain related disputes and projects. Matthew’s dispute resolution and litigation practice includes claims arising out of the carriage of goods, which encompasses defence work, cargo recovery, and salvage and general average claims; representing ports and terminal operators on third party liability, property damage and business interruption claims; and marine insurance policy and commercial disputes.Matthew also provides advisory services to transport operators on standard terms and conditions and contracts of carriage, and to insurers on products and policy wordings.

Matthew has been ranked in Chambers UK 2014, 2015 and 2016 as an ‘Associate to watch’. He is described as being “an eager and very intelligent lawyer who won’t stop until he finds a solution”. Clients say that, “He knows the industry and the way it works”.

Module C: Neil Atkinson, Head of UK Underwriting, Munich Re Specialty, Global Markets, UK

With over 25 years’ experience in the regional marine market Neil started his career in Marine Claims for Commercial Union before moving on to be a broker for Marsh for 4 years.  Then he moved into Underwriting and after a short spell with Navigators he then went on to spend the next 17 years at CNA Hardy, first as Senior Underwriter, then Regional Marine Manager and latterly as Head of Marine for the UK Company with responsibility for Cargo, Freight, Equipment, Sub-Sea and the Logistics Package Product.

Neil has recently joined Munich Re Specialty, Global Markets, UK, where he is Head of Underwriting across a number of product lines.  Marine and Marine Equipment is still the main area of focus but the remit also includes other specialist lines including Cyber, Terrorism and Engineering.

Andrew D’Alessio, Head of U.S. Cargo, Zurich North America

Andrew is a senior leader in ocean marine underwriting with more than 25 years of experience in cargo risk, multinational insurance program design, and global trade exposures. Over the course of his career, Andrew has held underwriting and leadership roles across major global insurers and brokers, including AXA XL, Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, and Marsh. His background spans both underwriting and brokerage, providing a well-rounded perspective on market dynamics and client needs within the marine insurance sector.

Andrew is actively involved in industry leadership and education. He serves as Chair of the Cargo Committee at the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU), where he contributes to the development of industry guidance, policy frameworks, and thought leadership. He has also played a key role in advancing marine insurance education, including current service on the IUMI Education Forum and formerly as AIMU Education Co-Chair and as an instructor for advanced cargo and multinational programs.

He holds a Master of Business Administration from Fordham University, with concentrations in Finance and International Business, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from the State University of New York education system.

The course is suitable for senior practicing underwriters and senior cargo claims professionals with significant experience who want to gain a greater knowledge of their class of business. The programme is also suitable for experienced maritime professionals with an interest in marine insurance such as brokers, insurance managers, surveyors, etc.
