The use of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been on the rise across all walks of life, including onboard pleasure craft. The yacht industry has had several battery fires, and it is fair to say the industry has not yet caught up to the rapid growth of the use of LIBs. At the same time, the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency has published a Guidance Note for the yacht industry, addressing what they consider the major risks when it comes to Lithium-ion batteries. While the document currently still serves as guidance, its recommendations will come into regulation in the new version of the REG Yacht Code in 2024. Also, the yacht insurance sector has generally accepted the guidelines in developing a new common yacht insurance clause covering these battery types. Hence it is guidance in name only and must be followed in principle.

In this webinar Adam Jackson, Head of Yacht Services at ABL Yachts, will discuss risks associated with LIBs carried onboard yachts, the key points from MGN681 and the Joint Hull Committee Clause as well as risk assessment and loss prevention measures.
