Insuring fruits and other perishables bears many risks and challenges, starting with the condition of the goods at the place of origin where the quality of the products at the plantation will have an impact on the journey. Fungi and diseases such as citrus black spot may cause problems at the outset. During transportation, technical problems and delays pose additional risks, and are related to the conditions of the cargo, e.g. containerized, refrigerated, temperature and ventilation controlled. At the destination, phytosanitary authorities such as ministries of health may have different rules and legislation in place.
Johan Van der Meirsch, Manager Marine Department and Senior Surveyor at DP Survey, will share his expertise in the various challenges related to the insurance of perishables.
