Loaded risk – container fires and misdeclaration

02 November 2017

Fires on vessels are amongst the most severe hazards faced by the global shipping industry. The crew is in great danger when a fire breaks out on board, and every unsuccessful attempt to quickly extinguish a fire increases the risk of serious harm to people, property and the environment. Tackling fires on increasingly large container ships is becoming an even greater challenge.

Containers often contain a wide range of hazardous and toxic substances and insufficient or wrong declaration of container contents poses significant carriage risks. With container fires increasingly associated with misdeclared cargo, the first line of defence - to tackle misdeclaration itself - is a significant industry challenge.

In this webinar, Mark Russell, Vice President, Head of Cargo Claims at Gard, discussed the risks arising from misdeclared container cargoes and some of the risk mitigation complexities.
