Storage risks - loss prevention & underwriting considerations

24 March 2022

The storage of cargoes is associated with a range of safety and security risks. The temporary or long-term stowage of dangerous goods (DG) even has the potential to threaten life, the environment and property. The catastrophic events in Beirut and Tianjin are cases in point and strong reminders of the crucial importance for thorough risk assessments of warehouses on a regular basis.

In light of the absence of international rules or requirements for the handling and storage of (dangerous) cargoes, this webinar provides an overview of risks in relation to the stowing of goods. Scott Brown, Chief, Marine Risk Engineering at National Cargo Bureau will review key factors to assess storage risks and offer specific advice on the handling and storage of DG. This is followed by specific insights from Martin Mensch, Cargo Surveyor and Warehouse Risk Assessment Expert at Battermann & Tillery Group, into risks which are less obvious at first sight.

The session is introduced by Isabelle Therrien, IUMI Cargo Committee Chair and Senior Vice President at Falvey Cargo Underwriting. The Q&A with the panellists and the audience is moderated by Pascal Dubois, IUMI Loss Prevention Committee Chair and Director General at CESAM.
