From 1 January 2024, Mr Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco from the Republic of Panama will become Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He was elected during the 129th session of the Council in July and the decision was ratified by the IMO Assembly last month. He will serve as Secretary-General for an initial four-year term.
Mr Dominguez is both a science and naval architecture graduate and also holds an MBA. He worked as a port engineer and drydock manager before joining the Panama Maritime Authority in 1998. He became Panama’s Permanent Representative to IMO in 2014 where he chaired the MEPC until 2017. He joined the IMO Secretariat in 2017, first as Chief of Staff to the Secretary-General and then as Director of the Administrative Division and then Director of the Marine Environment Division.
IUMI works extremely closely with IMO on a range of environmental and safety initiatives and we look forward to continuing our relationship under the leadership of Mr Dominguez. We wish him all the very best in his new and challenging role.
