As part of its active engagement with IMO, IUMI has been part of a Correspondence Group working to revise guidelines that provide advice to flag states and others on how to deal with insurance certificates provided by liability insurers – this includes both IG and non-IG insurers. Its main purpose is to provide guidance to state parties to a number of conventions for accepting insurance certificates or similar documentation from insurance companies, financial security providers, International Group P&I Clubs and P&I providers operating outside of the IG.
A key finding from the Correspondence Group is that many flag states lack awareness of the requirements of the conventions. The new guidelines aim to educate all relevant stakeholders to reduce the possibility of wrong or incomplete insurance certificates being issued.
