Today at the 7th session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE), Are Solum from Gard gave a presentation on "Containership Fires From the Insurers’ Perspective". Containership fires have long been a concern for marine insurers and current SOLAS regulations have not kept pace with the growth of the vessels or the complexities of fighting larger and more dangerous fires. IUMI believes that unless this is addressed at the IMO with support and input from all relevant stakeholders, the number and severity of containership fires are likely to grow – and with it the number of seafarers’ deaths and injuries.
